Zippers in OEM seat covers
must hold up to ten years of sun and passengers

Leather covers for automotive seats are sewn and trimmed at the seat maker, then stay in service with the vehicle for ten years or more. A seat-cover zipper has to withstand cabin heat and UV, make no noise on the road, take the tension of seated occupants, and meet interior flammability and odor specifications. This page covers selection points for each area of the seat, common validation tests, and where the KCC automotive invisible zipper, S60 automotive zipper, automotive spiral zipper and hollow-tube zipper fit.

Cabin environment

Seat-cover zipper requirements for cabin heat, UV, road noise and seating tension

Heat and UV

In a car parked in summer, interior surface temperatures can reach 70–80°C, and UV through the glass falls on the seats year after year. Tape and teeth must not fade or turn brittle over many years of service.

Noise on the road

Automakers treat BSR (buzz, squeak & rattle) noise as a quality defect. The puller must not rattle under road vibration, and the teeth must engage smoothly with no rubbing noise.

Seating tension

When an occupant sits down, the covers on front seatbacks and side bolsters carry far more tension than any garment. The zipper must not burst open under repeated loading.

Concealed, flush fit

OEM interiors do not allow a zipper to show or stand proud. Seams must lie flat and follow the curved contours of the leather.

Selection by seat area

Zipper sizes and suggested KCC products for each area of a car seat

On a single seat, each area places different demands on appearance, strength and how often the zipper is opened. The seat-area table lists common configurations and suggested KCC products. KCC automotive-grade zippers are not yet listed on the KCC product site, so the product names link to standard-grade product pages or category pages; please enquire about automotive-grade specifications.

Recommended KCC products

KCC seat-cover zippers in three grades and the hollow-tube zipper for seat tracks

KCC automotive seat-cover zippers come in three grades that can be combined by vehicle segment and seat area: the KCC automotive invisible zipper, the KCC S60 automotive zipper and the KCC automotive spiral zipper. Seat-track covers use the KCC hollow-tube zipper. KCC automotive-grade products are not yet listed on the KCC product site; the linked CC5-C, CF4 and CF7 pages are standard-grade product pages.

KCC automotive invisible zipper

The KCC automotive invisible zipper is developed specifically for OEM seat-cover assembly. KCC high-tension tooth-sewing technology raises its closure strength without an extra reinforcing layer, so the seam is less likely to burst open when occupants sit down. The teeth are fully hidden, the seam lies flat, and the design focuses on resisting fading and aging under long-term sun exposure.

KCC automotive spiral zipper

The KCC automotive spiral zipper is made to the physical specifications automakers require. It is the lowest-cost of the three grades and suits cost-sensitive models, or seatback pockets and other low-visibility areas. KCC hollow-tube zipper

The tape of the KCC hollow-tube zipper has a channel for a tube, and the standard teeth are polyester. With a weldable metal tube inserted, the flexible fabric can be welded to the seat's metal frame through the tube; with a flexible tube instead, the whole zipper can bend to follow the curve of the mounting surface.

Seat-track cover

Fixing seat-track covers to the seat frame with the KCC hollow-tube zipper

The tracks for fore-aft seat adjustment need a cover to keep dust and debris out. Seat-track covers are usually flexible fabric, which is hard to keep attached to a metal frame over the long term. The KCC hollow-tube zipper uses a metal tube as the intermediary: once the metal tube is threaded through the channel in the tape, the tube can be welded directly to the seat structure, with no separate retaining clip to design.

  • Check welding conditions
The tape must not be damaged by heat during welding; verify this with your actual welding process during sampling.
  • Check attachment strength
Welded attachment points must withstand the pulling and vibration of years of seat adjustment.
  • Check tube specifications
Choose tube diameter and material to suit the frame structure, and provide drawings at the selection stage.

Cross-section of the KCC hollow-tube zipper: the metal tube, threaded through the channel in the tape, is joined to the seat's metal frame at the weld point, and the teeth on the other side connect to the cover. The drawing is not to scale; actual tube diameter, weld positions and cover shape depend on the seat structure design.

Validation tests

Common seat-cover zipper validation tests at automakers and seat makers, with industry reference values

Each automaker has its own material specifications. The validation table lists common tests and industry reference values; these are not values measured by KCC. Actual requirements follow the automaker's or seat maker's specifications.

Flammability reports

Seat covers have a long service life and go through cleaning, humidity and heat along the way. When requesting flammability test reports, check whether they cover the condition after washing or aging; the initial as-shipped condition alone is not enough. KCC offers flame-retardant tape options such as flame-retardant mesh tape; please confirm the test conditions against the automaker's specification.

FAQ

Questions seat makers and buyers often ask

How does the automotive invisible zipper differ from a standard invisible zipper?

The main differences are closure strength and weather resistance. The KCC automotive invisible zipper uses high-tension tooth-sewing technology to raise closure strength, and its design focuses on resisting fading and aging under long-term sun exposure. Standard invisible zippers for apparel usually do not have to take this much tension, nor do they face cabin temperatures above 70°C.

How do I choose between the three seat-cover zippers?

Choose by vehicle segment and seat area: the KCC automotive invisible zipper for premium models or high-visibility areas, the S60 automotive zipper for mainstream models, and the automotive spiral zipper for cost-sensitive models or low-visibility areas such as seatback pockets. The three grades can also be mixed by area on the same seat.

Do zippers need flammability testing too?

Yes. Interior flammability regulations such as FMVSS 302, ISO 3795 and GB 8410 cover seat covers and all sewing trims, including the zipper tape. Please state the target market at the selection stage so the matching flame-retardant tape and test conditions can be confirmed.

How can zipper noise be reduced?

The key is a puller that does not rattle and smooth engagement between slider and teeth. During sampling, we recommend BSR testing on the complete seat assembly. If a particular area is especially sensitive to puller movement, you can discuss fixed-puller design options with KCC.

Can these zippers be used beyond the main seat-cover seams?

Yes. Headrests, armrests, lumbar supports and seatback pockets can all follow the same selection logic. Airbag deployment seams are safety-critical and require a dedicated design specified by the seat maker and the airbag system supplier.
