Fabric thin enough to let light through calls for a lighter, finer zipper
Sun-protection jackets, ultralight “skin” jackets and other lightweight jackets are often made from a single thin layer of fabric. A zipper that is even slightly too heavy or stiff makes the front placket buckle and adds weight to the garment. This page covers zipper selection for lightweight apparel, acceptance tests and labeling requirements, and the specifications of the KCC lightweight zipper series: CF1, CC1, MF1 and the narrow-tape spiral zipper.

Zipper requirements for lightweight apparel: weight, stretch, wash durability and skin safety
Light and thin
Tape thickness is often specified at 0.8 mm or less. The zipper must not add noticeable weight to the garment or create a ridge along the front placket.
Moves with the fabric
Lightweight fabrics are soft and stretchy. The zipper has to follow body curves and stretch and recover with the fabric, without buckling or pulling tight.
Holds up to washing
Sun-protection jackets are worn daily and washed often. The tape must withstand repeated laundering without color loss, the slider must not corrode, and the zipper should keep the same opening and closing feel over time.
Safe next to skin
Lightweight apparel is worn directly against the skin. Children’s styles in particular need to meet limits on harmful substances and formaldehyde, and the teeth must not scratch the skin.
KCC lightweight series
KCC lightweight zipper series, lighter than size #3
In the KCC lightweight zipper series, the KCC CF1 spiral zipper weighs about half as much as the KCC CF3 spiral zipper (#3), and the KCC MF1 metal zipper weighs about 60% as much as a standard #3 metal zipper. The series covers spiral, invisible and metal teeth, so designers can choose an exposed, invisible or metal look.
The KCC lightweight zipper series is built mainly around size #1. The CF1 spiral zipper weighs about half as much as CF3, and the MF1 metal zipper weighs about 60% as much as a standard #3 metal zipper. The narrow-tape spiral zipper has a total width of 20 mm, 4 mm narrower than the 24 mm standard total width of CF3.

Compared with standard sizes
vs a standard #3 spiral zipperCF1 weighs about half as much as CF3, follows curves without stiffness and keeps the front placket from buckling.
vs a standard invisible zipperCC1 has a chain width of 3.30 mm and stays discreet even on sheer, lace or burnout fabrics.
vs a standard metal zipperMF1 is made with KCC-developed stamped-teeth technology and keeps the metal look at about 60% of the weight of a #3 metal zipper.
vs standard #3 tapeThe narrow tape has a total width of 20 mm, 4 mm narrower than the 24 mm standard total width of CF3, so it does not add bulk once sewn. Narrower tape can also be developed on request.
The KCC lightweight series is rated Class C+ to D (lateral strength per inch 300–378 N). For outdoor performance styles or areas that see frequent hard pulling, we recommend a #3 or #5 spiral zipper instead.
Chain widths of KCC lightweight zippers: CF1 2.40 mm, CF2 3.15 mm, CC1 3.30 mm and MF1 3.41 mm. The standard #5 spiral zipper CF5, at 5.90 mm, is shown for reference. Values from KCC product site specifications.

KCC CF1 spiral zipper (#1)
The KCC CF1 spiral zipper weighs about half as much as CF3. It is light and soft and follows curves without stiffness, and its polyester teeth have a smooth, low-friction surface, so the slider runs easily. CF1 is commonly used on sun-protection jacket plackets. The KCC CF2 spiral zipper (#2) in the same series has the same lateral strength per inch of 378 N (Class D).

KCC CC1 ultra-fine invisible zipper
The KCC CC1 ultra-fine invisible zipper is KCC’s smallest invisible zipper. The teeth are hidden on the inner side of the tape. CC1 suits sheer, lace and burnout fabrics, and urban casual styles that call for a low-key look.

KCC MF1 metal zipper (#1)
The KCC MF1 metal zipper is made with KCC-developed stamped-teeth technology and is KCC’s smallest metal zipper, weighing about 60% as much as a standard #3 metal zipper. The fine teeth suit soft, light fabrics.

KCC narrow-tape spiral zipper (#3)
The KCC narrow-tape spiral zipper has a total width of 20 mm, 4 mm narrower than the 24 mm standard total width of CF3, so it does not look bulky once sewn. It suits light jackets and shirts that need #3 strength while keeping a clean line. KCC can also develop narrower tape on request. The KCC product site does not yet have a dedicated page for this zipper; please enquire for specifications.
Lateral strength per inch is the crosswise force a closed zipper withstands per inch of width. Values from the KCC product site, converted at 1 kgf ≈ 10 N for convenience. Strength class per EN 16732; “+” means above that class. The KCC lightweight series is rated Class C+ to D; for outdoor performance styles that need more strength, choose the CF5 spiral zipper (Class E+, 663 N).

Zipper sizes and types for sun-protection jackets, skin jackets and lightweight jackets
The table lists common zipper sizes and suggested KCC products for each type of lightweight apparel. Product names link to KCC product pages.
A sun-protection jacket’s UPF is assessed on the whole garment, and the placket zipper tape is exposed to the sun like the rest of it. We recommend choosing UV-resistant tape rated to the same level as the fabric and including the zipper when the garment is submitted for UPF testing. Also confirm that the tape retains sufficient strength after UV aging. KCC can supply UV-resistant tape; please enquire with the KCC sales team for specifications.

UV-protection labeling
Taiwan’s CNS 15001 and China’s GB/T 18830-2009 allow a product to be labeled as UV-protective only if its UPF is above 40 and its average UVA transmittance is below 5%; UPF 50+ is a stricter, additional label.
Next-to-skin and children’s safety
China’s GB 18401-2010 regulates formaldehyde, decomposable aromatic amine dyes and pH. Children’s apparel must also meet GB 31701-2015, which prohibits cords at the head and neck and sets pull-strength requirements for attachments such as sliders.

FAQ
Questions designers and buyers often ask
Is a #1 spiral zipper strong enough?
For everyday commuter sun-protection jackets, skin jackets and lightweight pockets, a #1 spiral zipper is generally strong enough: the KCC CF1 spiral zipper has a lateral strength per inch of 378 N (Class D). For garments worn with a backpack, outdoor performance styles or areas that see frequent hard pulling, we recommend a #3 or #5 spiral zipper instead, such as CF5 (663 N, Class E+).
Which zipper works for sheer or lace fabrics?
We recommend the CC1 ultra-fine invisible zipper. The teeth sit on the inner side of the tape, so no obvious zipper line shows even when light passes through the fabric.
Will a metal look make a lightweight jacket too heavy?
No, it will not be too heavy. MF1 is KCC’s smallest metal zipper, at about 60% of the weight of a #3 metal zipper. It comes in plating finishes such as nickel silver, antique brass, imitation gold and bright silver, and suits lightweight jackets and shirts.
Should the zipper be included in UPF testing?
We recommend testing them together. UPF is assessed on the whole garment; if the placket zipper tape has no UV-resistant treatment, it can become a weak point in the protection and may also be the first part to turn brittle after sun exposure.
What should I look for in a zipper for children’s sun-protection jackets?
Choose the EP3 covered-teeth zipper, whose teeth are wrapped in fabric so they will not scratch the skin, and confirm compliance with children’s apparel standards such as GB 31701 and with limits on formaldehyde and other harmful substances.
